GIANTS ace Stanley Gene is aiming to sink former club Hull FC at the Galpharm tomorrow (3.00) and do his best to keep top signing Michael De Vere out of the centre frame!

The popular Papua New Guinean was one of the stars of the show as the Giants won 30-12 at Leigh in last week's Super League X opener.

Gene has been handed his chance in the centre to cover for Australian Test ace De Vere, who will remain on the sidelines with a knee injury until next month.

And the 30-year-old is aiming to produce another big performance tomorrow to lead his side to victory - and at the same time keep him in the reckoning for a regular centre spot.

"I'm loving the extra space out wide," said Gene.

"I know I'm only keeping the position warm for Michael, who I fully expect to come straight in when he's fully fit.

"But if that's something that Jon Sharp feels can't be taken for granted, I'd be delighted. It's a sign that I've done my job.

"Don't get me wrong, I would love to see Michael out there, because it's obvious in training that he has all the quality in the world.

"But I feel it's my job to make sure the team doesn't suffer in his absence.

"I'm delighted with the way it's gone so far, but this is just the start. We're determined to do well against Hull and build on last week's win."
