RICHARD THEWLIS is the new general manager of Huddersfield Giants.

The former marketing chief will take over the operational control of the Super League club from Giants' chief executive Ralph Rimmer.

This follows Rimmer's appointment as the new managing director of the McAlpine Stadium, although he will continue in the role of Giants chief executive.

Thewlis was Rimmer's automatic choice for the position, and he has no doubt he is the right man for the job.

"Richard has proved in the four years he has worked with me that he is a quality individual," said Rimmer, who will continue to be the Giants' Super League representative .

"He takes over the role with the full support of all those around him, including chairman Ken Davy and Jon Sharp and his coaching team.

"In my opinion, it was only a matter of time before Richard took greater control. We see this appointment as part of the continued progression and evolvement of the club."

Thewlis joined the Giants five years ago and has gained a good reputation as a rugby league adminstrator.

As well as increasing his role with the Giants, he has twice been appointed manager of the Super League Under 21s squad and was manager of the Scotland squad for last year's Home Nations Cup.

But he admits this new role is his proudest.

"It's an honour to be appointed and I'm determined to do what I can to continue to take the Giants forward," said the 34-year-old Thewlis.

"I'm lucky I have top-quality staff to work alongside in all areas of the club and I intend to tap into their experience as much as possible.

"My first major task will be to ensure next Tuesday night's season's launch at the Chicago Rock is a complete success.

"A good night would give the boys a big boost."
