Ukuma Ta'ai is a major injury doubt for the Huddersfield Giants’ opening play-off clash against Wigan Warriors at the John Smith’s Stadium on Thursday night.

The Tongan back-row forward suffered a badly split lip early in the second half of Saturday’s 58-6 defeat at Bradford Bulls and was rushed straight to hospital to undergo emergency plastic surgery to repair the damage.

Giants chief Paul Anderson has confirmed that makes Ta’ai ‘touch and go’ for the Warriors encounter, when Huddersfield expect to be back to full strength after resting the entire first-choice starting line-up at Odsal.

A final decision won’t be taken until later in the week, although Huddersfield could have a ready-made replacement in Dale Ferguson, who is closing in on a return after suffering a knee injury in training which kept him out of the side that beat Wakefield 40-0 eight days ago to claim the Super League Leaders Shield.

“Ukuma’s got a fair split to his lip and there’s no question he could be a doubt for Thursday,” said Anderson, who is expected to have several members of his squad announced in the Super League Dream Team later today.

“It just depends on how things go at hospital with the plastic surgery.”
