Coach Brian Smith criticised referee Chris Leatherbarrow after Wakefield lost again to the Giants.

The straight-talking Australian said he considered only two of the seven penalties his side conceded in the first half to be “legitimate”.

Smith said after Wakefield’s 34-24 defeat: “The boys were actually asking him, ‘Do you know what a surrender tackle is?’.

“He didn’t call one in the whole game, even though there were a lot of surrender tackles in the match.

“I don’t think he understands, and I also don’t think he understands when there’s a big contact in the tackle.”

Smith, though, was proud of his side’s performance and said: “The second half in particular is exactly what we’re looking for.”

Leroy Cudjoe scored his 100th career try as Huddersfield made hard going of beating the bottom side.

And even though the Giants are now guaranteed a top-four finish, coach Paul Anderson, whose side now have two weeks to rest because of the Challenge Cup, described his side’s display as a “shower of s***”.

He added: “I’ve asked the players what do you want - do you want to be in the top four or eight or the grand final?

“If it’s the grand final, that (performance) can’t happen again because it was complacent.

“I’m not going to mince my words, we were poor. If we want to be in contention we’ve got to be a million miles better than that.”
