HUDDERSFIELD Giants have signed former Wakefield Trinity Wildcats Super League prop Frank Watene - as the club's new development officer!
The powerful New Zealander will combine his duties at the Giants with those of a frontline forward with National League I club Hull KR, who train on a part-time basis.
But with Watene having had a similar development role while playing at Dewsbury Rams, he is not expected to find his new duties at Huddersfield a problem.
Having the former Junior Kiwi and captain of the Auckland Warriors 1999 reserve side on board will also mean Giants staff coach Jason Davidson can spend far more of his time with the Super League squad.
Besides his role with Jon Sharp's senior side, Davidson is also the club's community development manager.
But now Davidson is ready to hand over his duties on the school's development front to Watene.
"We've been wanting to bring someone in for some time, but we had to wait for the right man to come along," said Davidson.
"As soon as we realised Frank might be available we immediately pounced and got him. He's a great catch.
"He gained an exceptional reputation when he was doing schools work with Dewsbury Rams and I know he'll do a great job for us.
"He's enthusiastic, very approachable and knows his stuff inside out.
"Frank's definitely a good addition to the staff and will enhance our reputation.
"But his appointment should have an extra positive knock-on effect in that it'll enable me to spend more time with the Super League squad.
"We're obviously working flat-out right now."
* The club are reminding fans that the Giants offices at the McAlpine Stadium will be open this Saturday (10am to 1pm) to sell season tickets.
