MARTIN ASPINWALL'S injury agony goes on.

The Giants' Great Britain winger had hoped to be back in action by now following pre-season groin surgery.

But coach Jon Sharp admits his recovery is taking longer than expected and Aspinwall may not be seen in action until mid-March at the earliest.

"We had initially hoped Martin would have returned to action by now," said Sharp. "We kept our fingers crossed it would take him four to six weeks to recover.

"But, occasionally, it can take up to eight weeks and, unfortunately, that's the case here.

"That's disappointing for the club and disappointing for Martin.

"He's one of the best wingers in the game and any side would benefit from having him in their team.

"But the one consolation is the way those who have stepped in for him have performed.

"Mat Gardner has done a great job. This was his chance to put pressure on the other outside backs in the squad and he's taken it with both hands.

"I really am delighted with the form he's been showing."

Gardner could, of course, face competition for a spot against Hull KR at the Galpharm on Sunday (3.00) from fit-again Shane Elford (chest infection).

But it's clear Sharp will be keeping team changes to a minimum after the encouraging performance at Bradford at the weekend.

"Everyone came through OK, so keeping the same side is a strong option," he added.
