It's amazing to think Saturday’s game at Wigan Athletic will be Town’s 4,000th in the Football League.

And wouldn’t it be great to mark the milestone by going to the DW Stadium and getting all three points?

There have certainly been some ups and downs over the previous 3,999 games and I’m proud to say I featured in exactly 400 of them.

We have a history right up there with the best, going back to the amazing triple title triumph of 1924-26.

We have had some top managers in Herbert Chapman and Bill Shankly, and some great players like Billy Smith and Denis Law.

Now we are looking to the future under a great owner-chairman in Dean Hoyle, who has provided a great new base at Canalside.

Mark Robins is working hard to take us forward on the pitch and it’s interesting that we’re about to play Wigan, because they are a great example of what can be achieved.

It’s a town similar in size to Huddersfield, and they have spent time in the Premier League, won the FA Cup and are currently competing in Europe.

I can remember going to watch Town at the old Springfield Park and standing on what was pretty much a grass banking.

Now, like us, they play at a smart ground shared with rugby league and look capable of making a push for a Premier League return.

It’s hard not to like Wigan – last season’s FA Cup fifth round apart! – and Dave Whelan has established a really solid club.

They built themselves up over a period of time, with Whelan making good managerial choices and then showing them some loyalty.
