Defiant Huddersfield head coach Gareth Lewis remains ‘100% convinced’ he has the squad capable of mounting a serious National II North challenge.

After opening their campaign with a 24-17 home triumph over South Leicester, the men from Lockwood Park have suffered three straight defeats.

They have been beaten 26-8 at home to Otley and lost at Tynedale (23-17) and Luctonians (29-13) and slipped to third bottom of the fledgling table in the process.

As a result, the pressure is on to beat unbeaten Sandal at Lockwood Park tomorrow to get their season back on track.

And despite their visitors having opened with four wins out of four, Lewis knows he still possesses the squad capable of beating Sandal and putting the shaky start firmly behind them.

“I’m 100% convinced this group of players will come good,” said Lewis.

“In fact, I’m confident they’ll put in a performance to be proud of against Sandal this weekend.

“Sandal have made a fantastic start to life in National II North and will come to us full of confidence.

“But this is a local derby, and the form book goes straight out of the window.

“It’s only early in the season, and this could be just the sort of contest we need to really kick-start our campaign.

“The last three weeks have obviously been disappointing, and clearly we’ve not made the start we’d be hoping for.

“But as a squad we’ve been working harder than ever to put things right on the training field.

“Despite the results, there have been many positives and we are creating chances.

“We all know we must sharpen up our accuracy in the final third and, hopefully, we can do this on Saturday.”
