Huddersfield YMCA Under 17s have underlined their potential with a 26-24 home triumph over a Sheffield Tigers side two divisions higher than them in the league structure.

The visitors made their quality count early on by opening up an early 12-0 advantage.

But after the initial nerves disappeared and they got to grips with the large Sheffield pack, the YMCA began to warm to their task and cut the gap to 12-5 at the break with a well-taken individual try from in-form full-back Danny Flanagan.

And although Sheffield made a bright start to the second period, it was the hosts who levelled the scores when winger Will Burns-Smith chased down his own clearance kick and ripped the ball from the arms of the Sheffield full-back to cross for a spectacular try under the posts, converted by Flanagan.

Yet such was the see-saw nature of the contest that twice Sheffield regained the lead before the YMCA finally clinched the game in the closing stages.

After the Tigers had made it 19-12, the Huddersfield side responded with the front row of Nathan Horsfall, Scott Richmond-Wood and Luke Chadwick constantly working hard and laying the platform for inside centre Oliver Whittaker to neatly change direction into a gap and cross the line.

Again Sheffield found an immediate response to regain the lead before left centre Austin Briggs opened a gap in the opposition defence and slipped a neat ball to captain Morgan Longley to brush off defenders and barge down the flank to score, with Flanagan converting to make it 26-24.

In a thrilling finale, Sheffield threw all they had at the YM defence, with debut centre Joslin Landu putting in one of the most noteworthy stints to help seal a stunning success.
