YMCA went on the rampage as they concluded their first season in National III North with a 69-19 thumping of Westoe.

YMCA were bidding farewell to player-coach Mark Whitehead and there were no great expectations from Westoe who were already resigned to their fate of relegation.

With YM knowing that their future in this league is secure with a creditable eighth place finish in their first season at this level they cut loose, but Westoe for their part never made it as easy.

Ultimately the power and pace of the YM back-line was the deciding factor with a brace of tries each for Adam Ryder, Gavin Stead and James Tindall, together with further scores from Sam Fletcher, Josh Lumb, Whitehead, Sam Housley and Sam Hodge and a conversion tally of seven for Gavin Stead.

Westoe competed well and piled on the pressure, however a break out of defence led to a converted score for full back Fletcher.

This was followed by a Ryder try after he had backed up Tindall who was hauled down just short of the line, picked up the loose ball and powered over for the first of his two scores – Stead couldn’t manage the conversion.

It was champagne rugby from the YM with the ball being thrown about with abandon, unfortunately when they play this style of rugby you get the best and worst of the YM, the worst coming after poor ball retention allowed Westoe to force their way over the line courtesy of second rower Younghusband and the subsequent conversion from Sam Hughes.

Housely and Westoe’s Potts were both dispatched to the bin after an altercation and within a minute Westoe were another man down after a late and high tackle flattened Fletcher long after the ball had been cleared out of defence, leaving the youngster with a suspected fracture to his jaw – the perpetrator lucky that he only got a yellow.

YM then put their foot on the gas and tries in quick succession by Tindall and Stead, one of which was converted.

Lumb added a further score after a solo run just before half-time to which Stead added the extras, bringing the score at half time to 31-7 at half-time.

YM came back strongly

Two further tries followed from the restart this time from Whitehead, playing his last game for the club prior to his move to Ireland, and Ryder who rounded off a move with a 60 metre sprint to the line, both of which received the Stead treatment and were converted.

Westoe back rower Joe McKenzie got a score for the visitors after a period of pressure in the YM 22 gave him the opportunity to force his was over. Unfortunately the angle of the kick made it too difficult for Hughes to convert.

The YM came back strongly and Housley was on the end of a good move among the backs to go over for a score out to left of the posts, but the conversion went begging on this occasion.

Westoe continued to have a go and were rewarded when their open side prop Raymie Elliot was on hand out wide to finish off a neat passing move. This time substitute kicker Luke Moffatt stepped up to add the extras and bring the score to 50-19.

The YM continued to throw the ball about and Tindall was there to finish a move which started in the YM 22 and swept the length and breadth of the field before the winger got the final touch – Stead converted.

Stead was on the board himself within minutes with an unconverted score and the final word was left with Sam Hodge who found himself covering on the wing.

The back rower showed his versatility with a neat step, working to within inches of the touchline to beat his man and sprint half the length of the field for the final YM try. Stead added the conversion and the referee had seen enough and called a halt to proceedings.
