Huddersfield fell to a gutting last-gasp defeat to Luctonians 29-23 having led the match for the majority of the game.

The Lockwood Park side are still without a win this season but came so close to breaking their duck after another highly encouraging performance at Mortimer Park.

Huddersfield got off to a good start with an early try from Austen Thompson after he forced his way over the line, with the conversion being missed.

Luctonians were soon awarded a penalty which they converted, and then followed it up with their first try of the match with the conversion putting them 10-5 up.

Huddersfield fought back well and scored a penalty of their own with Joel Hinchcliffe (left) converting.

Straight after Luctonians were a man down after a yellow card and the resulting penalty put Huddersfield in the lead by one.

Michael Clark then increased the lead with a try coming down the right wing.

With half-time approaching, Luctonians sprung a gap in the Field defence and ran through with the conversion putting them 17-16 up going into the break.

The start of the second half saw few chances for either side with the ball stuck in the middle of the park.

Eventually Huddersfield made the breakthrough on 50 minutes after a scrum saw the ball break for Dan Jeffrey with loads of space to complete the try, Hinchcliffe converting.

Austen Thompson, who had earlier received strapping on his fingers, was then sin-binned for Huddersfield giving Luctonians a way back into the game and eventually a try came for them in ten minutes to go with the missed conversion meaning Huddersfield stayed in front by just a point.

Luctonians pressed heavily as the clock ticked down but Huddersfield defended superbly despite the loud support of the home crowd.

However, a late and controversial sin-bin for Huddersfield for grabbling suddenly gave Luctonians one final chance.

And they took it, in virtually the last attack of the game with the right winger taking advantage of the additional space in the Huddersfield defence to score a last-gasp try, the conversion making sure of the victory.

Huddersfield will be looking to bounce back from the disappointing finish with a victory over Stourbridge at Lockwood Park next weekend.
