There's more than one reason to be merry this Christmas at Huddersfield Rugby Union Club – in fact there are four!

All the club’s teams – First XV, Falcons, Thirds and Academy – are top of their respective leagues at the traditional seasonal break.

That doesn’t mean there is no activity at Lockwood Park tomorrow, however, as the club stage a tremendous social occasion – the President’s XV against the Under 21 Select, kicking off at 3pm.

It means some of the coaches and players will be on opposing sides and there’s sure to be plenty of rivalry in the Workman household, with former fly half Greg playing for the President’s XV against his son Lewis, who is captain of the successful Academy side and lines up for the Under 21s.

“From where we were at this time last season to where we are now is well worth celebrating,” said first-team manager Lee Paxman.

“It doesn’t happen very many times in a club’s history to have all four teams at the top of their tables, and it’s a far cry from 12 months ago when we didn’t have an Academy, didn’t have a Second team and the Firsts were bottom of the league – so we are quite pleased!”

Paxman says the whole atmosphere at Lockwood Park is very positive and supporters, players and officials alike are already looking forward to the Firsts’ next match in National III North, which is at third-placed Sale on January 4.

“We are top of the National III North table with 64 points, six clear of Rossendale and seven clear of Sale – so our next game is a massively important fixture,” explained Paxman.

“There is a great buzz about the place and it is growing week on week, people are enjoying everything that’s going on and it’s fantastic.

“I think our members and supporters are really appreciating the rugby that’s being played as well as the results we are achieving.

“The Academy is flourishing with some excellent people involved, and Duncan Cleave and his team are doing a great job with the Third XV.

The Falcons have been carrying all before them with some massive scorelines – 81-0 last Saturday, 133-0 against Barnsley and an 80-odd against Bradford – and they’ve been running in some fantastic tries.

“Their coach, Phil Gostling, has massive experience with National I clubs in the Midlands and has been a great addition to the staff at Lockwood Park.

“Then the First XV, of course, have responded superbly under Gareth Lewis and it’s wonderful to see them top of the table after the struggles of the previous campaign.

“We have a very good pack and, when the pack have faltered, the backs have stepped up to the mark and it’s been great – we are not a one-dimensional team, we have options.”

Coach Lewis, who broke a collarbone against Beverley, is now recovering after surgery and is hoping to beat the clock and make himself available for the closing part of the season if needed, but it could be that he’ll be able to rest up until the 2014-15 season.
