Despite an early lead, Huddersfield Rugby Union Club fell to a more ruthless Sale side in National II North and their search for a first away win continues.

Following the previous week’s impressive second-half display against Chester, Field hit the ground running at Haywood Road before poor passing and an inability to finishing off plays led to a 19-13 defeat.

Straight from kick-off Field piled on the pressure and were awarded a penalty after two minutes.

Unfortunately, kicker Chris Bell couldn’t find his fantastic form from the previous week and planted the ball just wide.

Despite the early miss Field continued to dominate the opening 20 minutes and two penalties in rapid succession enabled Bell to regain his form to put the visitors 6-0 up.

While the impressive start suggested Field had finally found their away form, the second penalty conversion seemed to provoke Sale into a response.

The home side hadn’t broken into the Huddersfield half a single time during the opening quarter, but mere seconds after Field went six up the home team began to trouble them.

It wasn’t long before Sale began to get a foothold in the game, as a penalty was awarded 42m out and was converted by kicker Liam McGovern.

The game was blown wide open as both sides had chances, however neither side could produce the final ball.

Five minutes before half-time a darting run from Sale’s Tom Ailes led to Field’s Lewis Bradley being sent to the sin-bin, and McGovern converted the penalty to draw the scores level.

The yellow card had a major impact on Field as they lost their heads in a frantic closing spell to the half, and Sale’s pressure paid off as a fantastic move led to Jack Moorhouse scoring the game’s first try.

McGovern converted and the home side went into the break leading 13-6.

The second half started just as dramatically as the first, as Sale’s Matt Postlethwaite was shown a yellow card on technical grounds.

Field couldn’t make the man advantage count and Sale soon found themselves 19-6 up following two penalty conversions in quick succession from McGovern.

Despite leading comfortably Sale never looked fully in control of the game, and another yellow card, this time for Sale’s Adam Aigbokhae lead to Field reducing the deficit to 19-13 thanks to a penalty try and Bell conversion.

After getting into bonus-point territory, Field began to press for the win and several fantastic moves were let down by mistimed passes and a knock-on metres from Sale’s line.

Sale managed to see out the continuous Field pressure and walked away with the win.
