The Shay is heading for a sell-out!

A capacity 10,000 crowd is expected for Sunday’s crucial World Cup clash between Italy and Tonga, with around 200 tickets now left unsold.

That means the area is set to host a second World Cup sell-out crowd in the space of eight days, following the record 24,375 John Smith’s Stadium attendance for England’s 42-0 triumph over Ireland in Huddersfield on Saturday.

With both sides arriving at The Shay needing to win to secure a quarter-final spot, the stakes for the Italians and Tongans couldn’t be higher.

And after Tonga’s thrilling 22-16 triumph over the Cook Islands in front of another 10,000 crowd at Leigh on Tuesday, World Cup chiefs expect the remaining Shay tickets to be sold before the weekend.

“We expect to post the sold-out signs sooner rather than later,” said RFL communications manager John Ledger.

“Well over 9,000 tickets have already been sold, and with a 10,000 capacity that obviously means fans who are still wanting to go could be left disappointed if they don’t act quickly.

“The East and South Stands have already sold out, so we know the atmosphere on Sunday is going to be electric. A full Shay stadium is going to be fantastic to see.”
