In 1982, just a couple of years before I signed for Huddersfield Town, the movie Rocky III had theme music called Eye of the Tiger.

It has been something of a cliche, but it has come to symbolise everything about hunger in sport.

The music basically tells the story of when a person or team have lost their hunger and gone a bit soft, of when it’s all become a bit too cosy, and they get punished by a hungrier opponent who doesn’t have all the trappings of the existing champion.

I was reminded of it when watching the last week’s action in the World Cup in Brazil.

Quite a few teams showed it, but Algeria and USA in particular reminded us of what hunger looks like in a football team.

The energy, commitment and sheer determination of every one of their players – even though they have gone out of the tournament – was admirable.

For me, and I hope everyone watching in this county, that will be the lasting memory of this World Cup tournament.

And I hope the England players – who were born, though no fault of their own, in an era when even average ability has made them multi-millionaires – will think about those performances and take a look in the mirror.

They need to ask themselves whether England went out like that, because we certainly didn’t.

You can often tell in this country after five minutes whether a team are “at it” as we say, and when it happens this coming season I hope fans and players alike remember about the Eye of the Tiger.

Finally on the football theme, I had to laugh about the Luis Suarez situation.

He is now 1/6 to leave Liverpool, which is hardly surprising.

What a coincidence that barely five minutes after Suarez came out and apologised for the biting incident which earned him a four-month ban from the game, the Barcelona president was saying how amazing and humble Suarez was for apologising for his mistakes.

Incredible!
