It has been fascinating to watch all the old footage on the BBC these last few weeks to celebrate the 50th birthday of Match of the Day.

Like pretty much every other kid who loved football in the country, I used to try and stay up when I was younger to see all the highlights of the matches on a Saturday night.

I remember, too, when we got our first Betamax video recorder at home and we were able to record the programme and watch it on Sunday morning instead.

Nowadays they repeat it anyway, so you don’t need to bother, but it was all part of making sure you didn’t miss any of the action from the big top-flight matches that were taking place.

Of course, when I made the move from Town to Sheffield Wednesday back in the 90s we used to appear on Match of the Day each week.

One particular occasion sticks in my mind because we were playing against Chelsea at Hillsborough and I thought I had quite a good game, so I was looking forward to seeing it on Match of the Day later that night.

I tuned in as usual but, instead of getting the praise I thought I might be in for, Alan Hansen absolutely slaughtered me in his review of the match.

I don’t think he rated me very much when I signed for Wednesday – and he certainly let all the viewing audience know about it that night!

But if I was upset, my mum certainly was. I think it’s safe to say Alan has never been on our Christmas card list!
