It looks like the Premier League will certainly have a winter break in 2022.

There’s going to be plenty of talk about the inconvenience the Qatar World Cup will cause to our domestic football calendar.

But if we want to be involved in the tournament, we’re going to have to accept changes will have to be made.

The obvious answer is to start the season a couple of weeks earlier and end it a couple of weeks later.

And of course, there will be no summer World Cup to get in the way of doing just that.

It’s often argued that we are handicapped going into big international tournaments because of the fatigue factor.

That shouldn’t be the case for Qatar, because players will be going into the World Cup having played only half a season at club level.

It’s also interesting to think that rugby union and cricket clubs just get on with it when their top players are called up for international duty.

It would be great to hear what the likes of Jose Mourinho and Louis van Gaal had to say about that happening in football!

I agree with Stoke chairman Peter Coates, who said it’s about making the best of things.

FIFA will say their job is to promote football world-wide, and that’s what they are doing.

And why shouldn’t the Middle East get the World Cup?

After all, Europe and the Americas have had a stranglehold, and that can’t carry on regardless.
