When I was growing up, the FA Cup final was the biggest game of the year no matter who was playing in it.

With hindsight, that was probably because in those days it was the only game we ever saw live on television.

It was given the big build-up from as early as 9am with live coverage from Wembley, and I even remember each team having an ‘It’s a Knockout’ competition.

The whole day was all about the FA Cup final, rounding off with the game itself, the presentation of the famous trophy and the lap of honour – and I’m sure many readers will remember it very well.

Sadly, these days, the FA Cup is bobbing around looking for an identity.

The Champions League final, and the end of the Premier League season, with all the millions of pounds involved, seem to take centre stage.

And, in all honesty, the Championship play-off final which gives the winners a place in the Premier League and a reported £150m jackpot, almost takes a higher importance than the FA Cup final these days.

The FA Cup showpiece, though, is still always a great day out for the fans, and it’s almost becoming like the Challenge Cup final in rugby league, with fans of other clubs getting tickets and just going along for the occasion.

The final this year features Arsenal and Hull City, and people will wonder if the latter can add their name to a list of underdog winners including the likes of Sunderland and Southampton in the 1970s, Wimbledon in the 80s and, only last year, Wigan Athletic.

The more I look at the match and everything surrounding it, however, I can’t see anything other than an Arsenal victory.

Arsene Wenger and the Gunners haven’t won anything since 2005, but this is the perfect opportunity.

Hull City hung on to Premier League status through the goals of Shane Long and Nikica Jelavic who are both cup-tied, while the club’s record against top sides in the top flight is two wins from 20 games.

A fully-fit Arsenal with Aaron Ramsey and Mesut Ozil back to their best will surely have too much in their locker for Hull, even though the Humberside club have had a great season overall, with massive credit to former Town manager Steve Bruce.
