Really I should be getting very excited about Saturday’s rugby league showpiece at Wembley.

Two West Yorkshire sides in the final and the prospect of a match that is just too hard to call – which suggests a potential classic.

Now I know I am engaging Giants fans here, I am led to believe Bradford are probably your biggest rivals, but as a Wakefield follower this final sees me caught between the devil and the deep blue sea – or to be more accurate the devil and the other devil.

On one hand there’s Leeds Rhinos, the big-money club from the big city and 1968 and all that, and on the other Castleford Tigers, neighbours who are supposed to be at our level and not gallivanting off to London to play for a cup.

But putting the local rivalry to one side, you have to be impressed by what both clubs have achieved and really just wonder who will come out on top.

Leeds’ aging team have had a few unexpected setbacks in Super League, but have still managed to stay very competitive.

Castleford under Daryl Powell have become genuine league and cup challengers and given that their final line-up could be bolstered by players returning from injury and suspension they have every reason to be optimistic.

One thing for sure is that both clubs are ‘up’ for the cup.

Given that they went into the last four facing Widnes and Warrington, who must also have been dreaming of staging their own big derby down in London, the manner in which the Rhinos and the Tigers saw off the challenge from over the hills was quite stunning.

So let’s hope for a classic final and may the best team win – because for once I really don’t care who lifts the Challenge Cup.
