What a story it would be if Sam Allardyce got the England job.

Readers of this column will know I think very highly of my old Huddersfield Town teammate and, since I last mentioned I thought he would be a good choice, it’s been confirmed he has been interviewed for the post by the FA.

At the time of writing he was 2/5 on to be appointed and to take on the national team.

I think Sam has had an unfair press over the years and been tagged too often with the ‘long ball’ allegation.

All I can say is that throughout his managerial career, Sam has always got the very best out of the resources he has had.

He is not only hugely intelligent, but he is massively passionate and progressive.

At Bolton Wanderers, he was one of the first coaches to be looking at statistics and the Prozone feedback, and he has taken that thorough professionalism everywhere he has gone in his managerial career.

One thing is for sure – and I know I have emphasised this before – if England were chasing a game and not playing as they should, he would not have a problem going to Plan B.

At this moment in time, he could be exactly what England need, and for the FA to counsel plenty of opinion and end up talking to Sam is, in my opinion, a very good thing.
