St Joseph's are celebrating at the double.

As well as beating arch rivals Lindley Swifts 28-16 at Fartown in their Pennine League Championship I derby clash, it was also a result which means Joe’s already know they won’t be suffering relegation.

Their seventh success of the campaign means they can’t be caught strugglers Ossett or the Swifts.

Furthermore, with all the other games in the division falling victim to the wet weather, Joe’s have now moved up to fifth in the League table and can spend the rest of their campaign looking up rather than down

The game didn’t start as planned for Joe’s as they conceded a penalty try in the first five minutes.

Even though the conversion was missed, the Swifts’ confidence was high and it took some time for Joe’s to work their way back into the game.

However the Saints came good before half-time with three unanswered tries from centres Shaun Mitchell (right) and Sam Hendrick and scrum half Craig Lee. Stand-off Darren Kelly added two of the conversions to make it 16-4 at the break

In the second half Joe’s continued to control the game, adding another try from winger Richard Aka, which was again converted by Kelly.

With 20 minutes left Lindley hit back with a converted try of their own to cut the deficit to 12 points and make things interesting.

As the clock was running down, Saints made the game safe as Mitchell continued his excellent tryscoring form by crossing again, and Kelly added his fourth goal.

Just before the referee blew up for the end of the game, the Swifts grabbed a consolation try, but it failed to dampen the Joe’s celebrations as they secured a victory in which Joel Hawkyard, Joe Flaherty and Kelly claimed the man-of-the-match awards.

Two more Huddersfield derby game are on the horizon for the Saint as the travel to Emley Moor in the James Joseph Conlan Handicap Trophy on Saturday and welcome Newsome Panthers to Fartown in the league the week after.
