Around the world from Berry Brow
Apr 1 2009 By John Avison
He didn’t much like it there: "Too cold and wet, too much like England," he said. Shortly afterwards, he moved to Queensland.
He worked as a storeman for a firm making swimming pool equipment then became stores manager for an import-export firm in Brisbane.
Mike then accepted a job as stores manager for a steel company and that job later led to his being appointed steel yard foreman.
After seven years with the steel company he ended his full time working days managing a large building in the centre of Brisbane.
The last time we heard from him he was 65 and had just retired from full time work. His second marriage was to an Australian, Jocelyn. He has four children from an earlier marriage and several relatives in the Huddersfield area. "At the last count I had nine grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren," he said.
Sadly, Jocelyn died and Mike was some time recovering from the loss.
However, aged 71, he is now engaged to be married to a mere youngster of 68.
"My wife passed away in 2004," he said. "Since then I have moved to Western Australia and met a lady, Lynette. She has a son living in Geraldton, Western Australia, and daughter in the USA.
"We are going to the USA in May, then to Boston, Lincolnshire where we intend getting married on July 11 at 1pm, at the Centenary Methodist Church, Red Lion Street, Boston.
"Many family and friends will be attending from around the world and any friend, relatives or past acquaintances who know me from Huddersfield are invited to attend."
