Smiler: Stephen Lewis

Smiler

Clem Hemingway earned the nickname Smiler because he never smiled. He was first seen in the Episode That Certain Smile (1988) in which Compo, Clegg and Seymour visit him in hospital and smuggle in his little dog Bess. Forever down on his luck, his wife left him to go to Australia.

The character returned two years later in A Landlady For Smiler when he became Nora Batty's lodger - an arrangement which did not last as she was always finding him jobs.

Recently he appears to have been working for Auntie Wainwright. He tries to avoid Marina, as she has said she quite likes taller men.
