Nora Batty

ACTRESS Kathy Staff, who spent years as TV battleaxe Nora Batty, has been named Yorkshire Woman Of The Year.

The veteran actress stepped down this year from hit comedy Last Of The Summer Wine and returned to Crossroads, in which she featured previously.

Her success in the Yorkshire awards was mirrored by Mirfield- born actor Patrick Stewart.

He was named as Yorkshire Man Of The Year in the 2001 Yorkshire Awards, announced at the weekend.

Stewart is best known for his Star Trek role as Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

There was also a special award for Dewsbury-born Baroness Betty Booth- royd, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award after her recent retirement as Speaker of the House of Commons.

A special award was also given to former Leeds United player John Charles.

The awards are organised by a committee of leading Yorkshire figures and are now in their 13th year.
