Bedside vigil for star Thora

DAME Thora Hird was "comfortable and conscious" today after suffering a stroke.

The veteran actress has been visited by friends and relatives at the south-west London retirement home where she is staying.

She was taken ill at the weekend and doctors are still assessing the long-term effects of the stroke.

Last Of The Summer Wine star Dame Thora, 91, is one of Britain's best loved actresses and regarded as a "national treasure".

A spokesman said: "She is conscious and there are glimmers of her old self, but it is very difficult to make any judgements at this stage."
