Farewell to Dame Thora

A PRIVATE family funeral was being held today for Dame Thora Hird, one of Britain's best-loved actresses.

None of the late star's showbiz friends was expected at the service in Chichester, West Sussex, where the 91-year-old had a home near her daughter, Jan.

Her agent said there would be a memorial service later this year. Dame Thora, best known as Edie in Last of the Summer Wine, died five days after suffering a stroke on March 10.

Dame Thora starred in countless British post-war movies as well as gentle comedies such as In Loving Memory.

But many regard the highlight as her work with Alan Bennett in the Talking Heads plays.
