`New' village school is a star attraction

A VICTORIAN school on the brink of closure 20 years ago is now at the heart of a thriving community and has been virtually doubled in size.

The new £400,000 extension at Hade Edge Junior and Infants School was officially opened by Last of the Summer Wine actor Frank Thornton, watched by parents and children.

It took eight months to complete the extension and new wiring, plumbing and windows for the rest of the school.

Head teacher Adele Stringer is proud the school has retained its original charm - outside, the extension blends almost seamlessly with the Victorian original.

Inside, however, it is a different story. Gone are the relics of a century old school, peeling paint and draughty classrooms, to be replaced with two new bright, airy classrooms.

Mrs Stringer said: "Although the facade remains the same, Hade Edge is a school of two halves.

"The Victorian exterior, which remains in keeping with the village surroundings, belies the contemporary teaching and learning environment.

"I look forward to the day when all of the children can enjoy modern well-designed facilities."

Frank Thornton, who plays the part of retired policeman Herbert Truelove in Summer Wine and whose grandfather was born in Brighouse, said it was a pleasure to open the extension.

He cut a ribbon, unveiled a plaque and was presented with a framed picture created by the children.
