Lost steps upset lights switch-on

A MINI-drama was played out before Holmfirth Christmas lights switch-on.

A set of steps used to get dignitaries - including veteran actor Burt Kwouk - on to the back of a lorry to carry out the ceremony had disappeared.

The steps had been stored in an industrial unit in Thongsbridge.

But when Holme Valley councillor Royston Rogers went to get them on Saturday morning just hours before the ceremony, they had gone.

He said: "I was absolutely fuming.

"We don't know if they have been stolen or if someone has borrowed them.

"They are a beautiful set of joiner-made steps complete with a railing and we would love to get them back."

Thongsbridge electrician Peter Noble saved the day with another set of steps and the ceremony went ahead without a hitch - apart from rain.

Clr Rogers said: "It was a great day and it's just a shame the heavens opened for the switch-on.

"Burt was brilliant. He gave up two days, stayed overnight and walked all around Holmfirth meeting local people and shopkeepers. He never charged us a penny which I thought was fantastic."

Burt, 73, is best known for his role as Cato in the six Pink Panther films during the 1960s, 70s and 80s.

Since January this year, he has featured in Last of the Summer Wine playing Entwistle, a Chinese electrical handyman from Hull.
