Learn from Austria

GOOD old Austria. Taking a lead for once.

Did you hear? They have withdrawn from the Euro-vision Song Contest because of the growing political bias of the voting audience.

Quite right, too. The whole thing has become a farce and we should follow the Austrian example.

For one, many of the so-called songs wouldn’t stand up to the scrutiny of a Trades Descriptions officer.

And for two, it is no longer a contest but a political arena where countries with a grievance get the chance to kick any country they don’t like in the gulags and block vote for their neighbours.

We should have walked away years ago except the British organisers seem to enjoy sending a home grown pop group for ritual humiliation.

Perhaps they are trying to tell the rest of the world that we Brits know how to lose. That we are happy just to play up, play up and play the game.

Well I’m quite happy to have a go on a level playing field but not when its boobytrapped against a fair result.

Let’s follow Austria’s lead and leave the event as contenders – but continue to cover it with Terry Wogan providing his wonderfully witty and acerbic commentary.
