Cat’s eyes: Now for the bottom line

MY story about Percy Shaw brought a couple of instant responses from Eddie Mellor of Oakes and local Punch and Judy expert Les Clarke.

I wrote that Percy had invented those life-saving cat’s eyes back in the 1930s after driving in fog on a high moorland road. He almost went over the side when he saw the eyes of a cat that was sitting on the wall.

Both Eddie and Les make the same comment.

As Eddie says, “I think it was Les Dawson who said that, had the cat been facing the other way, Percy might have invented the pencil sharpener.”

That’s almost worth a boom, boom!
