ORGANISING a village fete or carnival can involve trials and tribulations, but can also be a lot of fun.
Old chum Brian Horton, one of the organisers of Berry Brow Carnival, writes, “I was perusing the minutes of committee meetings and came to the conclusion that we out-Dibble Dibley’s council meetings.
“For instance, fund raising is always an issue and some remarkable notions have been proposed.
A rather portly gentleman came up with the idea of a sponsored bed-push, himself being resplendent on the bed.
He’d obviously put some considerable thought into his scheme as he’d devised a route.
“This involved pushing him from Berry Brow to Lockwood, up Lockwood Scar to Newsome and back down to Berry Brow.
“Not wishing to refer to his gargantuan stature, the suggestion was dismissed on the basis that you only have to push a modern bed from one end of the bedroom to the other before it falls apart.
“A more profitable event was a raffle arranged by a lady member.
When she announced at the meeting in the pub that she had raised the princely sum of £25 the whole place erupted into cheers and shouts of yeeeesss!
“Her unbridled glee was sadly dashed when she realised the TV was on and Man U had just scored.”
Berry Brow Carnival will be held at Berry Brow Playing Fields on August 16 thanks to the hard work of local volunteers, the generosity of local businesses, Kirklees Council and Neighbourhood Housing.
