Denis: Meeting up with an old flame

YOU read about people getting in touch on Friends Reunited with disastrous results.

All of a sudden, boy meets girl again after 25 years and they run away together leaving family chaos in their wake.

So I took a deep breath when my first fiancé contacted me via the internet after 46 years.

Yes, I had a first fiancé.

Before I met my wife Maria, I was engaged to Margaret.

We were teenagers together in Timperley in Cheshire. We went out for a long time before becoming engaged but eventually split 46 years ago, when she went to Paris and I went to Blackpool.

As someone pointed out, they both have towers.

Margaret lived and worked in Paris, became an air hostess, travelled the world, lived in Australia, and eventually settled in Germany, where she still lives and teaches.

I lost track of all our old friends after moving away but Margaret stayed in touch with them.

And it was a shock when she contacted me last year after all that time.

When she said she was touring England this summer, I thought it an opportunity to meet again that I should not avoid.

I have lost too many friends over the years to take immortality for granted.

We organised a reunion with two other old friends I hadn’t seen since 1964.
