Hilarie: Help Rosie follow her musical dream

EARLIER this summer it was my privilege to meet a charming young school leaver, Rosie O’Hare, who, most kindly, agreed to model for one of my fashion pages.

Rosie, who lives in Birkby, told me how she had auditioned and, against the odds, won a place at the Arts Educational Schools in Chiswick, London.

But she was worried that she’d struggle to pay the £12,000 fees.

A talented actress, dancer, singer and musician, Rosie is now studying for a degree in musical theatre.

One of four children, she doesn’t want to be a burden to her family but has been unsuccessful in seeking, sponsorship from local companies.

In the past Rosie has herself been a supporter of good causes, helping to raise money for charity with musical concerts and a fashion show.

However, there is some hope as Rosie is currently 10th in line for an HSBC student bursary that would pay £5,000 of the fees.

Her father, Peter O’Hare, says she now needs more votes to rise up the leader board.

To showcase her talents she has produced a short video, which can be seen by Facebook account holders who search for the HSBC student bursary scheme.

“Entrants had to make a 90 second video of their charity work and how they will use their talents and put the bursary to good effect.

“It took us a week to script, edit and mix a video.

“It made us really appreciate how hard TV and media work must be,” said Peter.

Rosie’s plight highlights the fact that it’s difficult for children from ordinary backgrounds to attend performing arts schools.

As well as the fees, she faces the expense of living in London.

It’s also a foretaste of the sort of problems that will face would-be students next year as fees at universities soar to £9,000.

Vote for Rosie.
