Sam Casey: March of time never stops
Nov 26 2008 by Sam Casey, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
AT what age is it acceptable to start opening sentences with the words: ‘In my day…’?
I turned 30 on Sunday (gifts, cheques and letters of condolence to the Examiner office) and went out to celebrate on Friday.
I’ve already started to exhibit symptoms of what might be called early-onset middle-aged-man syndrome: pulling the legs of my trousers up when I sit down; resorting to Radio 4 when Radio 1 gets too much; nasal hair.
There was further evidence of my condition on Friday when, having ordered a round of six drinks, I was asked to hand over £26. I had to ask the barman to repeat the request.
I didn’t say: “In my day you could have taken someone out for a slap-up meal for that and still had enough for the taxi ride home.”
But I thought it.
