Lamentable record

A PLEA today for volunteers to set up a new Breathe Easy group in Huddersfield is a reminder of the UK’s poor record on lung disease.

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is the umbrella term for a number of conditions including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

It kills more people in a year than colon cancer, more men than prostate cancer and more women than breast cancer. It is a progressive and irreversible lung disease which is both preventable and treatable.

Yet there is very little funding.

The disease blights the lives of those who have it and places a huge burden on the NHS.

If people with COPD can be diagnosed earlier, we could dramatically reduce the death rate and human suffering from this debilitating disease.

Targeted health campaigns are needed in the worst areas.
