Kirklees way

WE all know it was a shotgun marriage when Dewsbury and Huddersfield were forced together for local government purposes to form Kirklees Council.

The two just don’t get along and it was a link of administrative convenience which had the sad result of diminishing pride and interest in local politics.

But Dewsbury MP Shahid Malik’s call for Kirklees Council jobs to be moved from Huddersfield to Dewsbury smacks of unrealism.

His argument is that it would ease gridlocked roads by removing council workers who travel daily from Dewsbury to Huddersfield.

But surely the result would be an increase in the number of people travelling in the other direction?

And we shudder to think about the cost of setting up new offices, even if the bill somehow remained on estimate.

Leave things as they are.
