Brown and UN

THE United Nations, for all its failings, is still a valuable organisation.

But the world has moved on since the structure was created in 1945.

Countries deemed as unimportant then have become more powerful on the world stage.

That’s why Gordon Brown is right today to call for changes which include the security council being expanded to include India, Japan, Germany, Brazil and South Africa.

If the UN is to continue to have meaning, it must move with the times to reflect the changing world order and new power bases.

Mr Brown also wants the UN to spend £100m a year on setting up a rapid reaction force to stop failed states sliding back into chaos after a peace deal has been reached.

Rapid reconstruction is needed on the ground once conflicts are over.
