Worthy accolade

WE welcome today’s news that Huddersfield’s maternity service is one of the best in the country.

It’s reassuring for all parents and parents-to-be that both Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Calderdale Royal Hospital have been rated so well.

But that’s based on performance at the time of inspections.

The reality we face now is that the service is to be dismantled and many of Huddersfield’s expectant mothers will be forced to travel to Halifax to give birth.

Fifty thousand people signed petitions objecting to the changes, but were over-ruled.

The message from today’s Healthcare Commission grading is plain: If it ain’t broken, don’t fix it.
