WAR is a ghastly affair. Our very best young men have died in conflicts over the ages.

ThereŠareŠaroundŠ70,000ŠwarŠmemorialsŠinŠtheŠUnitedŠKingdom. Many are recognised and in a good state of repair, but concern has been expressed about the neglect or destruction of some.

It is important that ordinary servicemen and women are remembered, along with the more well known leaders of the forces.

So it is entirely correct that Kirklees Council is being urged to boost its spending on memorials by £30,000 next year.

It is not a glorification of war, but a remembrance of those who sacrificed their lives for their country.

We owe them so much. We must not forget them.
