IT’S fair to say that many people regard local councils as a necessary evil.
So they won’t exactly be dancing in the streets today at the news that Kirklees Council has been named UK Council of the Year.
More like spluttering with shock and checking their calendars to make sure it’s not April 1.
Allegations will be made that the award is a big mistake, that’s guaranteed. But let’s be positive.
The overall Council of the Year accolade is regarded as the one all local authorities would love to win.
Let’s be proud of something achieved in our town and say well done to the people who were responsible.
We may grumble about problems with issues such as crime and traffic, but everywhere has these.
The award will raise the profile of our area. And that can’t be bad.
