Charity begins ...
Dec 1 2008 by Andrew Baldwin, Huddersfield Daily Examiner
TIMES are tough out there, we know, as jobless figures rise and shops hurtle into panic sales.
We’re all suffering.
But we are asking you to take a moment out to think of others who are far worse off this Christmas.
Those people so poor that they cannot afford food for themselves and their families.
We turn the spotlight today on the Welcome Centre, housed in Huddersfield Methodist Mission and a charity striving to make sure vital necessities get to those in desperate need of them.
Sadly, the number of people in need of this valuable service is certain to rise in these harsh times when we see the economy lurching from crisis to crisis.
As we relay in today’s Examiner story, the Welcome Centre can provide basics, the things that we all take for granted: bread, milk, a few tins and at least the ingredients to put together a meal for those who in the worst cases, haven’t eaten for days.
Our writer Val Javin spells out how demand is such that goods are flying out faster than they are coming in to the centre’s headquarters in the heart of Huddersfield.
This is where YOU come in.
Your donations are needed to keep the charity well-stocked.
Full details of how to support this good cause are given on our news pages today and we urge you to read the details and take the decision to act.
We featured the Welcome Centre in our columns last year and you responded magnificently to the cry for help.
The Examiner was proud to have played its role – and proud that the generous side of Huddersfield shone brightly.
They need your help again at the Welcome Centre.
