Top honours

IN today’s Examiner you can read the names of people who receive awards in the New Year Honours list.

While celebrities dominate the headlines, it is often the so called “ordinary people” included in the awards who encapsulate their true meaning.

It is a delight to see the names of Huddersfield people who give their time freely to help worthy causes such as mountain rescue and the Scouts.

The system has come in for some bashing in recent times and there are those who would like to have seen certain bankers stripped of their awards this year.

But the honours list remains for the majority a valid and appropriate way of acknowledging achievement.

The people named today have shown dedication and character – and now have a fitting accolade to show for it.
