The day the music died

IT’S the day the music died in Huddersfield with the news that Beaumont Street Studios has gone bust.

Bosses at the community music centre and radio station called in insolvency specialists to discuss winding-up the company.

And it will be a big loss to our town.

Over the past two decades the studios have provided people with the chance to get involved in the music scene.

It played host to indie bands including Embrace and Shed Seven and provided that step into the music industry which is often so hard to reach.

Not only is it a blow to the town’s music scene, but it’s perhaps another high profile victim of the recession.

Despite a cash injection of £10,000 a year from Kirklees Council, it’s thought there was no money in the pot to pay staff their wages.

There remains only a glimmer of hope that the recording studios can still be saved.

And with no similar studios in the town, it will be a big loss to bands and artists who have the potential, but no longer a place, to make music.
