Wake-up call over our icy roads

WITH the bad weather continuing the problems on our roads are not yet over.
And it’s come to a head for Holmfirth families who watched in horror as an unoccupied and securely parked adapted van slid across a road because of ice and crashed into a wall.
It happened minutes after parents Paul Wharton and Kate Seabridge had dropped their children off at school and both are thankful no-one was hurt.
But for all who saw the incident unfold, it’s been a wake-up call.
With further snow predicted and our road surfaces in a poor condition as a result, it’s highlighted what could have been a terrible accident.
The parents have called for either school routes to be fully gritted or for the roads deemed at risk to be closed.
It’s a measure which, although extreme, would ensure the safety of not only young children but everyone else too.
They say lessons must be learnt before a tragic accident.
