Leader: Speed and parking

HONLEY is to have new 20mph speed limits and widespread parking restrictions.

All sensible people will no doubt welcome the curb on speed – after all it would be dangerous to try to drive through some of that village’s streets at 30mph.

Perhaps there is now an argument for many other villages and residential roads to follow suit.

Of course, most people drive sensibly and would not dream of doing 30mph down their own road if it is on an estate or narrow road. Others, unfortunately, need constant reminding.

The parking restrictions in Honley may prove to be a more controversial move.

No-one has the right to park on the public highway outside their home, but in these modern times so many people have cars and they have to be left somewhere.

The best way to solve parking problems is for people to park sensibly and thoughtfully – not in front of other people’s driveways – even if it means a short walk to the house. If this had been the case in Honley perhaps there would have been no need for the council to take such tough action.

But now Kirklees is imposing parking restrictions, it has a duty to enforce them.
