THE case of mean thief Carol Garner who stole from an 88-year-old woman shows the impact such crimes can have on elderly victims.

The pensioner suffered a stroke shortly after the theft and now lives in fear.

Her family says she will remain a victim for the rest of her life.

Garner did not only steal her victim’s money, she also stole her peace of mind. Garner is the main carer for her husband which had a bearing on the sentence she was given.

She is very fortunate the judge showed her more mercy than she did her victim and decided not to send her to jail.

The law does show compassion – and some would say too much sometimes.
