THERE’S some good, heartwarming news in the Colne Valley as the meals on wheels service has been extended.

If anyone wanted a great example of the so-called Big Society then this is surely it – community-minded people rallying around to help others.

It was a desperately sad day when Meals On Wheels ended as the service was far more than just a meal.

It was the chance for the elderly – especially those living alone – to see a friendly face and have the chance to talk to someone.

In these dark economic times the work being done by all those who serve meals on wheels in the Colne Valley deserves tremendous praise.

In Golcar, sisters Sharon Higginbotham and Lynn Ainley have been helped by Golcar Lily landlord Darryl Broscombe who has agreed to provide the food for the service at cost price.

The Hairy Bikers may have started something, but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication not only to keep it going long after the TV cameras have gone, but to then take it an important step further and expand it.

Now there is no excuse for anyone in the Golcar area not to enjoy the meals – simply contact the organisers via the numbers they have provided.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if people in other areas across Huddersfield followed suit to show that we are a friendly, caring town.
