THE saga of whether or not there will there be a Tesco in Holmfirth took a new turn last night with planners advising councillors to block the project.

Kirklees councillors will meet next week to decide whether the long-debated store can go ahead at the former Midlothian garage site off New Mill Road.

There have been passionately argued cases put by Holme Valley residents for and against the plan.

While many would agree that a new supermarket would bring benefits to the valley, there is considerable distance between those who think the Midlothian site appropriate and those who think it is marred by traffic concerns.

What is clear is that next week’s decision is crucial for the economy of the Holme Valley. A new supermarket would give residents more choice, better job prospects and a potential to reduce journey times to other centres.

With a number of sites up for potential development, there should be no reason for councillors to get it wrong.
