VALUE for money is also an issue that will be top of the agenda for those families facing rises in care home fees.
Kirklees Council is expected to approve an increase in fees for residential and nursing homes. The council has given a commitment to the independent sector providers to reflect increases in the national minimum wage in the level of fees paid to them.
The council expected an increase in the minimum wage and reflected that in its budget preparations for 2012-13. Proposed changes go to Cabinet next week and it is hard to see how anyone can expect that they will not be approved.
While the rise in fees may present an unwelcome extra burden for those who have to pay them in full, maintaining the level of proper care for elderly people must not be compromised by a failure to meet proper national wage levels.
Providers must be seen to address other cost issues too to ensure that there is no reduction in standards of quality and safety.
