THE Ritz cinema in Huddersfield was an iconic building which over the years entertained thousands with films, concerts and musical shows.

At its heart was a huge Wurlitzer organ which after several decades entertaining audiences was removed so the cinema could have two screens.

News that at least part of the organ is being given a new lease of life will delight many – and doubtless bring many memories flooding back.

Volunteers from an organ society are using the pipes taken out of the former Ritz cinema in 1972 to rebuild the organ in the Empress Ballroom in Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.

For anyone who knows anything about the world of theatre organ music, that in itself is something to cheer about. For Blackpool is an iconic spot – especially in terms of theatre organ music.

It’s good to think that some of the memories created here in Huddersfield will live on in the Fylde coast and that the pipes taken from the Ritz will create more memories for future generations.
